Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on the passing of Sir Shridath Surendranath “Sonny” Ramphal

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation learnt with deep sadness of the passing, earlier today, 30 August 2024, of Sir Shridath Ramphal. 

Sir Shridath was a distinguished son of Guyana, a committed Caribbean man, a regional integrationist and icon, and a respected international statesman.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is pleased to announce the signing of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) - European Union (EU) Partnership Agreement, known as the "Samoa Agreement" by the Government of Guyana. This significant accord aims to strengthen ties, promote sustainable development, and enhance cooperation between OACPS member states and the European Union.

El Gobierno de la República Cooperativa de Guyana toma nota de que el Gobierno de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela ha presentado hoy una comunicación a la Corte Internacional de Justicia de conformidad con el plazo estipulado por la Corte para la recepción de la Contra memoria de Venezuela sobre el contenido del caso relativo al Laudo Arbitral de 3 de octubre de 1899 (Guyana c. Venezuela) que está en curso.

His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali held bilateral discussions with a 12-member delegation from the United States at State House today.

The meeting discussed several areas, including energy, food, and climate security.

The US delegation included Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Representative to the United Nations; US Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot; and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Energy Resources Laura Lochman.

President Ali was joined by Prime Minister Brigadier the Honorable Mark Phillips, Vice President the Honorable Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, other Members of the Cabinet, Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud and other government functionaries.

His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali, while in Saint Lucia for its 45th Independence Anniversary celebrations, held a meeting with Guyanese living on the island.

During the engagement, His Excellency highlighted Guyana’s development agenda, including the Government’s programme to attract skilled workers, economic diversification, initiatives to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and several of Guyana’s social welfare programmes.

President Ali also spent time responding to questions from the diaspora community.
